HUDiscrimination
I have been looking for a place to rent on Craigslist for many months . There have been many rentals that fit my criteria, except they do not take HUD.
It had been so frustrating and I’m angry. HUD helps those of us who are less fortunate. Not all HUD recipients are bad people, slobs or people who have no respect for the properties of others.
Some landlords just don’t want to pay the taxes that are required. How absolutely sad for those of us who need a place to live.
I’m not saying that I believe that their having to pay taxes for renting is right but why not include a portion of the rent for that purpose so we HUD recipients can have a place to live.
These landlords have their own homes and extra that they can rent out. I have nowhere to go except a tent!
I’ve been here on Kauai for 40 years. I want a place to call home! What’s the deal?

Mahalo Paul Weil
As usual, Horace Stoessel is right on target (Nov. 6 letter “Public service”) when he asks members of the public to join him in “paying well-deserved tribute to Paul Weil,” who is Chairman of the Board of Ethics but whose term will soon end.
Paul has been the consumer’s beacon of light on the BOE where his common sense, knowledge of the law and fearlessness of what anyone might think has given him the fortitude to vote his conscience even when he knew his vote would be the only “yes” or “no” vote on the board.
This government of ours needs more Paul Weil’s on their boards and commissions and maybe the skepticism and mistrust associated with the status quo would disappear.
Thank you, Paul, for all your time, efforts and guidance on this extremely important board. Hopefully you will remain involved with our government.

Work harder
While admirable for intent, David Thorp’s letter describing a “New Depression” is riddled with dots that are impossible to connect in the real world (“The New Depression,” Letters, Nov. 8).
Mr. Thorp is correct that we may be heading into a Depression, we do have high unemployment, many have exhausted their “unemployment” benefits, and poverty is rising. But then, true to form of the bleary eyed left, the author incorrectly places the ultimate blame on the “ruling class” (I think he means the evil “rich”), whoever they are.
Isn’t the “ruling class” in our form of government called a voter (and you don’t even need a driver’s license to be one of those)! Thanks to Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and the liberal left brain trust, anyone who breathes can vote, and they don’t even need to be American citizens! Didn’t these undocumented, and other ignorant “voters”, give us a government that’s made so many mistakes and miscalculations our economic system is paralyzed with uncertainty? You want to know who’s to blame for all our economic problems, Mr. Thorp? Look in the mirror! “Free” Health Care for All indeed.
Then the author proceeds to paint a Utopia world, paid for and mandated by “government”, including a miraculously efficient path to more infrastructure (roads and bridges etc.), green-tech, better tech, and “economic justice for all” (right out of and the communist manifesto). Of course the actions taken to achieve this, as described by the author, include higher taxes on all investments, no tax write-offs or subsidies, tougher environmental restrictions, and WALLA! We have all kinds of money to do what we need to create Utopia…. Huh?
I thought Government builds roads and bridges with the voter’s money? Hasn’t “green tech” in many instances proven itself not yet economically viable given the alternatives (aka our Presidents poster child Solyndra etc.)? Don’t higher taxes give more to the already bloated “Government” that just can’t keep itself from throwing away billions ($1.3 trillion in the past 3 years) of the voter’s hard earned money on miscalculated quick fixes (cash for clunkers, bailouts, infrastructure improvements etc.); that didn’t work!
There’s only one way for America to get back on it’s path to your Utopia, Mr. Thorp! Regain our moral values and work ethic, recommit to “state (not federal) driven” education as an absolute must for all citizens, no more government benefits for illegal immigrants (and enforce the immigration laws already on the books), or make them temporarily legal workers if they learn the language and are working hard to “earn” citizenship, shrink our bloated and obese government, give states more say in the lives of their residents and their families, ask not what your country can do for you (no more “free stuff” to Occupy babies and lazy losers); ask what you can do for your country (get off your butts and create more businesses. Work harder!).
I’m afraid if we use your “benevolent King” or liberal left Utopia formula Mr. Thorp the “New Depression” you describe will actually become the final “Collapse”.
