LIHU‘E — Two young men were apparently looking for more than burgers at McDonald’s last month.
The Garden Island is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual who walked off with the newspaper’s cash box at the Lihu‘e McDonald’s. The theft was clearly captured on video surveillance at 6:31 p.m., Oct. 24.
The Circulation Department received a call from a McDonald’s manager to report the cash box was missing. The management provided video footage that shows someone sliding a newspaper over the cash box then walking out with it.
In the video, a male on a cell phone walks away and returns as a second male waits until the moment is right to cover the cash box with a newspaper, before sliding it off the counter and walking off with it.
The Circulation Department said the small metal lock box has a coin slot and that this type of theft doesn’t happen very often.
The Garden Island wants to put a stop to this type of criminal activity and send a message to would-be thieves that the newspaper will prosecute thefts of its racks and coin boxes.
Anyone with information about the crime is urged to call 241-6787 or 241-6711.
