LIHU‘E — Kuhio Highway contraflow hours have been shortened to two hours on weekdays until road work scheduled to last five to six weeks in Wailua is finished, according to state officials.
The Department of Transportation is advising Kaua‘i motorists of lane closures and traffic pattern changes due to construction on Kuhio Highway between Kapule Highway and the Kapa‘a Bypass Road.
GP Roadway Solutions on Monday began drainage improvements along the southbound lane of Kuhio Highway followed by centerline rumble strip installation, traffic sign upgrades, highway marker installations and striping operations. The work is expected to end in mid-December, a DOT press release states.
The work will be done from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding state holidays. During construction hours, traffic will be restricted to a single lane in each direction.
For the duration of this project, the weekday morning contraflow will be shortened to 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., daily. The normal hours of contraflow operations are from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m.
The speed limit through the project area will be reduced to 30 miles per hour for safety. Saturday contraflow hours will remain unchanged.
Motorists are advised to use caution while driving through the area and to allow for extra travel time. Roadwork is weather-permitting.
