Kapa‘a Middle School was the only Kaua‘i school to be recognized during the Hawai‘i’s Distinguished Schools luncheon hosted by Department of Education and Frito-Lay at the Hilton Hawaiian Village on O‘ahu, Oct. 27.
School included in the Hawai‘i Distinguished Schools program for this year made an impressive 10 percentage point growth in both reading and math over the past five years, states a release from the DOE.
Kapa‘a Middle School, according to its data, made an overall 29 percent gain for “All Students” in English and a 35 percent gain for “All Students” in Math, states the release.
This is taken in comparison between the Spring 2006 and Spring 2011 Adequate Yearly Progress reports on the Hawai‘i State Assessment tests.
Kapa‘a Middle School was listed as one of 12 schools in the Continuous Growth Award category, joining other schools including He‘eia Elementary, Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Elementary and Intermediate, Kea‘au Middle, Governor Samuel Wilder King Intermediate, King Liholiho Elementary, Kohala Elementary, Kohala Middle, Mililani Waena, Palolo Elementary, Pohakea Elementary and Waiahole Elementary.
Three schools were named the 2011 National Blue Ribbon Schools including King Liholiho Elementary, Koko Head Elementary and Waialua Elementary.
Five schools were named in the Hawai‘i’s Distinguished Schools category including Enchanted Lake Elementary, He‘eia Elementary, Hokulani Elementary, Lanikai School and Manoa Elementary.
Frito-Lay, the sponsor of the luncheon, paid for eight Kapa‘a Middle School representatives to participate in the event.
