James R Jimenez has been selected by the National Guard Bureau and the Hawai‘i Army National Guard as the next Command Sergeant Major of the 29TH Brigade Support Battalion. The CSM is the senior noncommissioned officer of the command at the battalion or higher level. The CSM carries out policies and standards on performance, training, appearance and conduct of enlisted personnel. The CSM gives advice and initiates recommendations to the commander and staff in matters pertaining to enlisted personnel and battle focused training.
A promotion and change of responsibility ceremony was recently conducted at the headquarters of the 29TH BSB located in Kalaeloa, O‘ahu. The 29TH BSB has a critical wartime mission of providing continuous uninterrupted sustainment support to the 29TH IBCT and attached units. The 29TH IBCT is projected to deploy to Afghanistan during 2013 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Jimenez joined the Hawai‘i Army National Guard during the summer of 1987 and attended basic and advanced individual training at Fort Benning, Georgia. Graduating as an Indirect Fire Infantryman (11C), his first duty assignment was with A Company 1ST BN 299TH INF located in Hanapepe. In April of 1989, Jimenez enlisted into the active army and was assigned to HHC 1ST 1-69 AR, 3RD INF DIV, Kitzingen, Germany, while Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm were occurring; Jimenez’s unit was selected to perform rear-detachment duties for the division. His next assignment was with the 3-327 INF, 101ST Airborne Division. Upon completion of his active-duty tour, Jiminez returned back to the Hawai‘i Army National Guard and has held numerous duty positions within the organization. These assignments include Mortar Squad and Section Leader for A CO 2ND 299TH INF, ANCOC Small Group Leader, RTI, BNCOC Branch Chief, RTI, and First Sergeant of A CO 2ND 299TH INF and TRP C 1ST 299TH CAV. Jimenez deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom III as the Intelligence Sergeant for HHC 2ND 299TH INF. During Operation Enduring Freedom –Philippines 07 and 08, he deployed to the southern Philippines as the First Sergeant for HHC, 29TH IBCT’s FWD 8 and FWD 14 in support of the Joint Special Operation Task Force-Philippines. Jimenez’s military schooling includes Air Assault School, Jungle School, Primary Leadership Course, Basic and Advanced Non Commissioned Officer Course, Total Army Instructor Course, and the Small Group Instructor Course. Jimenez is slotted to attend the United States Sergeant Major Academy next year.
Jimenez’ awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (3rd Award), Army Commendation Medal (4th Award), Army Achievement Medal , Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal (3rd Award), National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal w/ 2 Service Stars, Non Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (Numeral 3), Army Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon (2ND Award), Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon (2nd Award), Armed Forces Reserve Medal w/ “M” Device, Roman Numeral II, and Bronze Hourglass Device, State Active Duty Ribbon, Combat Infantryman badge, Air Assault Badge, and the Meritorious Unit Citation.
Jimenez is employed with the United States Postal Service and Smith’s Tropical Paradise. He resides in Lihu‘e with his wife Shanlee and daughters Jamilee and Ashlee.
