HANAPEPE — A Kaua‘i High School fumble recovery on its own one-yard line preserved a 13-13 tie against Waimea, Saturday, at Hanapepe Stadium.
Waimea, celebrating its homecoming, made its mark early when Hoku Aveiguetero lit up the scoreboards in the first quarter.
But the point-after came up empty, giving Kaua‘i the one-point bulge after Kanoa Iwasaki capped a second quarter drive with a two-yard touchdown and followed through with a successful point-after boot for the 7-6 lead with 7:32 remaining in the half.
Kaua‘i took the lead in the third quarter when Kelson Andrade capped its opening drive on a 30-yard hit to Kaiea Iwasaki in the end zone, Kaiea stretching past the defense of Waimea’s Brock Tacata and Eric Costa.
But the point-after kick failed, Kaua‘i settling for a 13-6 lead.
Waimea answered by closing a 73-yard drive which started late in the third quarter by tapping paydirt when Job Delos Reyes found Patrick Keamoi-Strickland on a nine-yard pass on the rightside.
Brock Tacata’s boot graced the touchdown for the 13-13 stalemate with 8:10 showing in the game.
But the jousting was not done as both teams had one more shot before the final buzzer, Waimea’s Delos Reyes driving in to the Raiders’ one-yard line before losing the ball to a fumble with 1:09 left in the game.
Waimea wraps up its season, Saturday when the Menehune travel to Vidinha Stadium for a match against Kapa‘a at the Warriors’ homecoming.
Kickoff for the JV game is 12:30 p.m. with the varsity match starting no earlier than 3 p.m.
