LIHU‘E — The 2012 Pi‘ina Hoku Youth Leadership Class will put on a kids sports camp this Saturday at Kapa‘a High School.
The “For Da Kids Sports Day Camp” is indented for kids who may not have the chance to play certain sports, or sports at all, Lana Spencer, director of operations for Leadership Kaua‘i, said.
“Our group wanted to give kids the opportunity who don’t normally play sports to have the opportunity,” Spencer said. “Then we’ll provide them information on how to get involved with those sports.”
The Pi‘ina Hoku Youth Leadership class is comprised of 17 high school juniors from around Kaua‘i. The group was tasked with organizing a free event to provide for the community and chose a sports related event based on familiarity.
Mikal Moranz, a Kaua‘i High School student and member of the Red Raider basketball and volleyball programs, said a lot of the members of the group play sports and figured they could bring that experience to the kids.
“We came up with a lot of ideas but since most of us are sports oriented it seemed like the thing to do,” Moranz said.
At the camp, kids will be divided into three age groups: 4-6 year olds, 7-9 and 10-13. The groups will then each be assigned one of three sports: basketball, soccer and kickball. The groups will rotate through each sport throughout the day and will finish with a provided lunch.
The members of the leadership class will assist with all of the activities during the camp. Moranz said he will be coaching the basketball group and assist with refereeing.
The goal for creating the camp was not only to provide the kids in the community with a free activity promoting physical activity, but also to improve the leadership skills among the group of 17.
The 17 students had to fundraise, organize and advertise the event, and as of Tuesday afternoon, 57 of the camp’s 60 open spots have been filled.
“It’s really brought out our leadership skills,” Moranz said. “We’re all inputting ideas and everyone is working really well together.”
