HANAPEPE — Hanapepe Colts’ Mitey Mite Degan Davis provided the pivotal difference, Saturday, completing a successful point-after-touchdown to give the Colts a 7-6 edge over the Kekaha Titans Mitey Mites at Hanapepe Stadium.
Jensen Battulayan put Kekaha on the scoreboards first, peeling off a 43-yard touchdown in the final quarter to break the scoreless game. But the PAT was shut down by the Hanapepe defense.
The score was answered by Hanapepe’s Makoa Vanaman, finding paydirt on an 18-yard dash. Davis’s PAT iced the game.
Wailani Kawahalau scored two touchdowns for the Koloa Redskins Mitey Mites, including the go-ahead score in the final quarter to give Koloa its only win, 20-13, against the Kapa‘a Eagles in the weekend series.
Kawahalau’s 11-yard run to the end zone in the fourth quarter broke a 13-13 tie, Kawelo Huddy doing the point-after honors to give the Redskins its 20-13 final.
Kahanu Davis found the end zone following a 10-yard run in the first quarter and Huddy converted the PAT for the 7-0 lead.
Kawahalau upped the ante with a 15-yard scoring run to give Koloa a 13-0 advantage after just one quarter.
But the Kapa‘a Eagles answered in the second quarter when Makoa Gorospe pushed two yards to the end zone and Keawe Cabebe completed the point-after for a 13-7 halftime deficit.
The Eagles Mitey Mites persisted, as quarterback Cabebe bulled one yard for the tying score in the third quarter.
The Kapa‘a Eagles turned the tables, Sunday at Hanapepe Stadium, taking a 19-0 shutout over the Koloa Redskins in the Junior Pee Wee division and finishing the Junior Midget matchup with a 0-0 stalemate.
Kaiona Nakamura-Makanai put the Eagles’ first score on the board in the opening quarter, scampering 10 yards to paydirt followed by Jai Alapai adding to the score on a 20-yard run in the second quarter, the score being iced by Ekolu Rivera’s point-after for a 13-0 halftime lead.
Rivera put the final Eagles JPW score on the board in the final quarter with a four-yard charge into the end zone.
Two other games were forfeited due to low numbers, said Sherri Agosto, president of the Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football League.
This weekend’s games move to Vidinha Stadium where the Hanapepe Colts Mitey Mites go up against the Kapa‘a Eagles Mitey Mites starting at 8 a.m., Saturday. The Kekaha Titans Mitey Mites will face the Lihu‘e Patriots starting at 10 a.m.
Sunday will feature three games starting with the Colts JPW meeting the Eagles at 9:30 a.m. followed by the Colts Junior Midgets meeting the Eagles at 11:30 a.m. The Kekaha Titans Junior Midgets will face the Lihu‘e Patriots in the final game of the day starting at 1:30 p.m.
