The Hawai‘i Reapportionment Commission on Friday released updated maps reflecting the group’s decision earlier this week to discount non-permanent military residents and out-of-state college students from the population.
The commission faces a Monday deadline to finalize new political boundaries for Hawai‘i’s House, Senate and congressional districts.
The population changes — which amounted to “extracting” 16,458 residents out of the population — do not affect the number of Hawai‘i House and Senate seats assigned to each island. Previously, all non-resident military personnel and their dependents had not been counted in the population base.
