The “old guys” crew of Namolokama Canoe Club is attempting to add to its cache of winnings by tackling the Ka‘iwi Channel, Oct. 9 in the Moloka‘i Hoe Canoe Race.
Six of the crew, Steve Baker, Steve Landis, Tom Thompson, Gil Donnelly, Jim Celeti and Jeff O’Hara, will make up half of the 12-man crew needed to participate in the channel crossing from Moloka‘i to O‘ahu.
This year, the “old guys” will be attempting to win its second straight age group gold medal in the 38-mile crossing.
Earlier this year, the “old guys” sprouted thoughts of being the best in the world after winning gold in the Hawai‘i State Regatta in the 55 age group.
They added more gold by capturing the 60 age group at the Queen Lili‘uokalani 18-mile race for the second year in a row, this year’s race being held in Kona on the Big Island and celebrating its 40th anniversary.
The “old guys” made the journey in two hours, 12 minutes, putting them tops not only in the 60 age group, but also the 55 age group, the canoe touching with an overall 66th place out of 144 participating canoes.
