There I was at my first Mixed Martial Arts fight on Kaua‘i, helping a friend with his fighters. I wondered how I would be accepted, or would I be accepted at all, as I’m not from here. The only person who knew my background was the coach I was helping out. As always, I decided to just be myself and help out where I could.
But as the fight progressed, the next thing I knew I was being asked questions, wrapping fighter’s hands and fitting in like I had been with these guys for years.
Aloha, my name is Danny Good and I am an avid MMA fan. I have been watching MMA since the early 1990’s back when Royce Gracie, Dan Severn and Ken Shamrock dominated the scene. Of course way back in another life time, I wrestled and played football throughout my school years for a 4A and a 5A school. 5A high schools are bigger than some colleges, and I earned my way all the way to state in both sports. I don’t know if you know much about Oklahoma sports, but football and wrestling are revered as two of the most important things in the world, up there next to God and Country.
I joined the military and served our country proudly for just over 22 years. While in the military I was lucky enough to train, work and deploy with units like the 82nd Airborne Division and JSOC, or Joint Special Operation Command as you might know it. I served in multiple combat tours throughout the world, with my greatest accomplishment being making it home alive and pretty much in one piece, although I may have left a screw or two out in a drop zone or desert.
With those units I trained and excelled at hand to hand combat, participating, judging, and cornering fights within the military community. During my military career I kept what I had learned during my high school sports: ‘Always do my best. Your body can take a lot more than you think it can. Respect your opponents and never underestimate them’. Put all this together and that is why I am so drawn to the MMA world. I am reminded of the competition of my school years, and the comradeship of my military years.
The MMA fight scene here on Kaua‘i is growing tremendously, and in the past year, I have gotten deep in the middle of it. I feel there are many stories to be told and am looking forward to sharing these tales with you. Whether it is an up and coming fighter I think you should know about, or the unfolding of the latest drama amongst promoters, I will always try to be fair and respectful in my presentation of the story. Finally the Fight Corner is here. Let’s get it on!
