WAILUA — A 16-year-old Hanama‘ulu female died in a single-car crash early Sunday morning in Wailua, county officials have confirmed.
Nahele Kapua died of injuries sustained as a passenger in a crash at approximately 12:50 a.m. on Kuhio Highway along the Wailua Golf Course near the Kaua‘i Community Correctional Center, according to the Kaua‘i Police Department.
Two other passengers, both 17-year-old females, were injured and taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital. One of the survivors was medivaced to Queen’s Medical Center on O‘ahu in serious condition. The other remains at Wilcox where her condition was unknown at press time.
The vehicle was heading north on Kuhio Highway when it veered off the road and crashed into a tree along the golf course, according to police.
The highway was closed in both directions following the crash. It was reopened at approximately 3:53 a.m.
Kapua is Kaua‘i’s fifth traffic fatality of 2011.
