There’s something new brewing in Lihu‘e. The Plantation Coffee Company opened its doors in the Lihu‘e Plantation Building after nearby businesses and Lihueans asked the catering company to offer a full menu of breakfast and lunch items.
Owners Melinda and Arvin Montgomery and their daughter, Aurora Deverill, wanted to open a cafe that serves “cost-friendly” healthy menu items.
The cafe lives up to its motto “healthy food, wealthy mood” by serving a smorgasbord of delicious, freshly prepared meals.
“Since our business folks — including ourselves — know what it’s like to eat a big lunch then want to take a nap after, we decided to offer up something to keep people productive and ready to go even after breakfast or lunch,” said Deverill.
The cafe offers a selection of healthy breakfast and lunch items. Whether you want to grab a quick bite to go or sit down and enjoy your meal, this cafe is ideal for anyone working in Lihu‘e.
“Our priority is consistency of good coffee and good quality healthy menu items,” said Deverill.
The restaurant’s breakfast menu offers a protein-packed morning burrito filled with eggs, black beans, cheese and salsa ($4). This writer is a fan of the sunrise bagel, a delicious combination of eggs, tomato and cheese ($4).
The best deal on the menu is the gourmet lunch pack ($6). The lunch includes a freshly prepared sandwich, chips, a cookie and drink.
The chicken mac nut sandwich is a mixture of chicken salad and whole macadamia nuts, which gives it a nice crunch. It’s served on a buttery and flakey croissant with a side of mango salsa.
The Turkey Rose sandwich is also a favorite, which tops thin slices of roasted turkey on whole wheat bread and complements it with rosemary mayonnaise.
On the lighter side, the cafe also offers chicken, shrimp or tossed salad ($5 to $8) and soup for $3 a cup.
If it’s a boost of caffeine that you need, the cafe also serves hot and cold drinks, ranging from $1.50 to $3 (a deal compared to other coffee shops).
In the future, Deverill hopes to install a fully functioning espresso bar “so people who are in Lihu‘e can go to another place to get their espresso drinks.” This will be up an running within a month, she added.
Plantation Coffee Company is located at 2970 Kele St. in Lihu‘e. The cafe opens at 9 a.m. Monday through Friday and is closed on all holidays. Call 652-3875 for more information.
