LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i police have arrested a suspect in the Wednesday robbery of an American Savings Bank in Lihu‘e, the county announced this afternoon.
Kaua‘i Police Department took David Verden Williams Jr., 35, of Sacramento, Calif., into custody at about 6:18 p.m. yesterday at a Princeville hotel.
Through tips received from the public and the cooperation of hotel staff, police identified and located the suspect after he checked in at the St. Regis Princeville Resort yesterday afternoon.
Officers apprehended Williams without incident and recovered a large sum of cash from his room and belongings. He was transported to a police cellblock, where he remains in lieu of $100,000 bail.
Williams is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
The Rice Street robbery occurred at about 1:10 p.m. Wednesday when the suspect walked into American Savings Bank, passed a note to the teller demanding money and pointed an unknown object at her from under his shirt, the county stated in a release. He then fled the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash.
After the incident, police disseminated surveillance photos and a description of the robber to local media.
“Over 20 officers from all three KPD bureaus worked relentlessly over the course of the past two days,” KPD Assistant Chief Roy Asher of the Investigative Services Bureau stated in the county news release. “We would like to thank the community for their assistance. With their help, we were able to bring this man to justice in a relatively short period of time.”
The county said normally federal law enforcement agencies investigate crimes that occur at financial institutions; however, Kaua‘i has no on-island federal law enforcement presence. KPD, therefore, handled the investigation.
