LIHU‘E — Elia Lagoc was surprised when her pink obake anthurium was awarded Best in Show honors, Thursday, the opening day of the Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau Fair at the Vidinha Stadium parking lot.
“People say I have a green thumb, but I don’t know, I just grow them,” Lagoc, a resident of Hanama‘ulu, said while helping distribute ribbons of other anthuriums at the fair set up.
Neill Sams of The Orchid Alley in Kapa‘a was a dual winner, taking two American Orchid Society, a national association of orchid growers, awards of merit.
Sams’ Vanda Manuvadee Cindy Banks earned the AOS Highly Commended award while his Miltassia Dark Star ‘Darth Vader’ earned an AOS Culture award.
Those awards lead off the list of winners for the Garden Island Orchid Society exhibit, which is supplemented by a sale area in the commercial tent.
The Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau Fair opened its four-day run, Thursday, with numerous attractions appealing to all members of the family.
Kamalei Berg celebrated his 8th birthday out of school, helping his grandmother, Shelly Spencer, with a Lego project that he entered in the Kaua‘i Association of Community and Family Education contest for youth.
“He’s been working on it during the entire summer when he came to my house,” Spencer said. “Today is his birthday, and he got to come and help me because the project was too big for me to handle.”
Bill Spitz of the county’s Office of Economic Development was helping with the set up of produce and fruits, stopping to check on a captivating pink ginger specimen.
“This is really nice,” Spitz said. “It’s still soft and the grower said he sings Filipino songs to it under the full moon. That and chicken manure must be the secret.”
Beth Tokioka of the Mayor’s Office was putting finishing touches on the county’s booth, where she said updates on the mayor’s Holo Holo 2020 will be available, along with information from Civil Defense and the Office of Elderly Affairs.
“This is just the start,” said Laurie Ho, a long-time farm fair leader. “A lot of the stuff will start coming in after lunch as it gets closer to the gates opening.”
A full schedule of events and information on the various aspects of the annual fair is available by visiting www.thegardenisland.com and clicking on the farm fair tab, or visit www.kauaifarmfair.org.
The fair runs through Sunday night.
