PUHI — Some 50 motorcycles roared to life as the sun sank below the horizon, Saturday night at the Kaua‘i Harley-Davidson store.
The riders mounted their steel steeds following the pule and briefing for the third annual Howling at the Moon Motorcycle Night Ride hosted by the Garden Island HOG group.
Tommy Awong, one of the riders, said this is the only night motorcycle run hosted by a motorcycle club.
“We used to run up to the Koke‘e meadow, but I think they had concerns about the return trip in the night,” he said. “So now we just make the run out to Mana and back.”
Howard Faria, the event coordinator and one of the lead riders, said the event benefits Kaua‘i Life’s Bridges, a nonprofit which services the survivors of sudden or unexpected deaths. Life’s Bridges helps the survivors through counseling and support.
Among those leading the group was Mark Stulpe, a Kaua‘i Police Department officer for eight years. He was ready for the ride, exchanging his contacts for conventional eyeglasses for the night cruise.
Bobby Ayonon, one of the motorcycle enthusiasts, was with his wife Cyndi at the National Tropical Botanical Garden’s Moonlight in the Gardens fundraiser.
“I would be riding with the guys for this event,” he said. “But I already had the tickets for the NTBG event so I guess I’ll wait until next year.”
Bobby Barros of the Garden Isle Racing Association rolled up with a portable field light for when the riders returned. “I also have to call Ron Victorino who wants some for his Aloha from Kaua‘i to Japan fundraising concert,” he said.
