MAUI — The Hanalei Canoe Club took home the gold medal in the Girls 18 division of the 60th Annual Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association State Canoe Championships, Aug. 6, on Maui.
The Hanalei team, comprised of Ginger Zietz, Amber Vernola, Sarah Zietz, Marg Milbrand, Eurielle Blair and Celeste Makarewicz, set the pace for strong performances from several Kaua‘i teams.
In addition to the gold medal, the Hanalei club took home a bronze in the Girls 16 and Men’s 55 divisions while tacking on a silver in the Mixed Open division.
The Niumalu Canoe club took eight teams to the championships and came home with a bronze medal in the Girls 12 division.
There were 39 different age groups at the races, with each race having 14 lanes. Also, there were 54 different teams from around Hawai‘i that participated.
