Hawai‘i or Mexico? Mexico or Hawai‘i? This is often a question facing those who are planning their next vacation. Luckily, Mariachi’s Kaua‘i is doing its best to make the answer to that question easier.
With a large selection of Happy Hour specials, including the expected Margaritas and tequila infused drinks, Mariachi’s offers the Mexican experience in a distinctively Hawai‘ian setting.
On the lanai that looks over Kalapaki Beach, visitors are greeted by festive Mexican music and decorations. Sitting waiting for food, it’s common to hear the sizzling of fresh fajitas being served or the singing of happy birthday to someone.
The birthday’s are a treat at Mariachi’s. When I was there on Monday, there were two separate birthday parties and when the staff comes out singing, they drape the birthday person in a pancho and a sombrero — to either their delight or utter embarrassment.
“It’s like we’re in Mexico now,” Julie Fisher said, donning her celebratory pancho. “We’re (heading) back to Illinois tomorrow but this was a fun last night.”
Just like most Mexican places, you’re welcomed to your table by a plate of chips and salsa. The food is good and comes in big servings. I enjoyed a chicken ranchero burrito and probably won’t have to eat again for the rest of the week.
With its central location next to the beach and easy access to some of the other bars or shops around Kalapaki Bay, Mariachi’s is a great place to start a night with happy hour or to relax and enjoy the tastes of one tropical land while being in another.
Mariachi’s is located at 3501 Rice Street and is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Happy Hour begins at 2 p.m. and lasts until 6 p.m. For more information call Mariachi’s at 246-1570.
