Summertime is at its peak when it comes to heat in Waimea, so an option to stay cool is a must.
It is so hot lately that the Waimea Pool comes to mind, but there has got to be another way to beat the heat. I already ate a big lunch box, and I feel like taking a nap, but it’s too hot for that. If only someone or something can save me from this hot mess I got myself into.
Hold on, is that a bird? Is that a plane? No wait, it’s Super Duper 2 ice cream shop to the rescue. It’s at the same location the original Super Duper ice cream shop was when it first opened back in 1966, next to Waimea’s laundromat.
“We call the ice cream shop Super Duper 2 because it’s a re-open; it’s the second time around for the name and this shop location,” said Lisa Johnston, the owner.
If you remember her father’s Super Duper ice cream shop that was open for four years from 1966-1970 and then sold to other business owners (closed in 1974), then you know all about their premium ice cream treats. If you were too young to have remembered or not even born like myself, then let me remind you.
As you walk in, the shop resembles the old shop with the red and white paint colors. Lisa bought the lease back in January 2009, but finally opened the shop in October 2009.
Almost two years strong, Super Duper 2 has been catering their ice cream delights (shakes, sundaes, floats, scoops, pies, and more) to the public and visitors with hospitality and premium ice cream quality from Roselani Tropics ice cream that was founded on Maui. “It is very important to me that we sell Hawai‘i-made products, and the fact that I was born and raised on Maui only made it feel right too,” said Johnston.
I absolutely am a big fan of Roselani Tropics ice cream as much as Meadow Gold ice cream, but let me share a little something about Roselani Tropics ice cream: Lisa and her team of employees serve Roselani Tropics ice cream with 18 percent more butterfat than the Roselani’s ice cream you get at the store.
As you take a bite, you sure will taste the difference. The ice cream is rich in flavor and texture. It’s a great balance with bananas and strawberries; I found that out when I tried the banana split sundae.
I was not disappointed, not at all. I was so happy it made the kid in me smile. “Right now, our two top Roselani ice cream flavors that are in demand by our customers is the Chocolate Chip Ripple and the Macadamia Nut Crunch,” Lisa said.
Super Duper 2 participated in the Taste of Waimea last year and saved many kids’ hopes of sweet moments to make and reflect back upon when they get older. I am glad Super Duper 2 has reinvented itself, and now its transformation is saving hot souls on the Westside of Kaua‘i.
If you would like Super Duper 2 to help you cool down, head over to Waimea town where the store is open Sunday through Thursday from noon to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from noon to 10 p.m.
“And if we are closed but see you outside our window, you can bet that we sure will open our doors to you,” Johnston said. “Local kine grind, supporting both Kaua‘i residents and visitors and selling Hawai‘i products and awareness.
“No can go wrong,” as the locals would say.
