The Hanalei Watershed Hui, the Hanalei to Ha‘ena Community Association and the Hanalei Center recently co-sponsored a youth education project to stencil a message on the storm water drains in Hanalei Center reminding folks that what goes down the drain ends up in the ocean, a news release states.
Joel Guy, president of the Hanalei to Ha‘ena Community Association and Maka‘ala Ka‘aumoana of the Hanalei Watershed Hui helped the youngsters paint the message on the sidewalk.
The sign includes a graphic of the ‘o‘opu, a native fish prevalent in the Hanalei Watershed rivers who spends part of its life in the ocean. The stencil was provided by the City and County of Honolulu, Department of Environmental Services.
Future projects are planned to mark more of the drains around Hanalei. For more information, call the Hui at 826-1985.
