Registration for the first Kalapaki Bay July 4th 750/1500 is currently being accepted through the Kaua‘i Loves You website or at the YMCA of Kaua‘i.
Hosted by the YMCA, the Pu‘uwai Outrigger Canoe Club and the Niumalu Outrigger Canoe Club, the event will take off at 8 a.m. at Kalapaki Beach.
The event is a short course swim or Stand Up Paddle around the bay with a choice of a 750 meter sprint or a 1500 meter middle distance race.
Swimmers will hit the water at 8 a.m. and SUP racing starts at 9 a.m. which means an individual may participate in both venues, if they desire.
Registration is $25 in advance of the event and $30 on race day.
“This is an event for all ages and abilities,” said Brian Curll of Pu‘uwai Outrigger Canoe Club in an email.
A flier for the event, billed as an Ocean Sprint Racing Swim and SUP event, encourages youth and beginners to participate in the challenge across the bay.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Swim Kaua‘i Aquatics program, Pu‘uwai and Niumalu canoe clubs’ nonprofit athletic programs for children and adults.
