An Irish pub with a strong Hawaiian flair across from the county jail and co-owned by an attorney who used to be a county prosecutor could only be called the Jailhouse Pub and Grill.
The Irish/Hawaiian pub opened at the Wailua Golf Course less than a month ago. If you’re hungry for some ono breakfast then stop by on your way to Lihu‘e. If you’re thirsty for an Irish/Hawaiian brew, stop by on your way back.
Bartender Brandi Nakaahiki-Young is Hawaiian — a mixed-plate Hawaiian indeed — but she pours a “Black Rock” better than any Irish would. True story, because this refreshing mix of Irish and Hawaiian (the beer, not the girl) can only be poured by a Hawaiian with some Irish blood (the girl, not the beer).
“Black Rock,” besides being a treacherous and elusive surf spot in Wailua, is a unique stack of Ireland’s Guinness over Kona’s Fire Rock.
Contrary to popular belief, Brandi was not named after the spirit, but after the “fine girl” in that 1972 hit song about lonely sailors, and what a “good wife” a “fine girl” named Brandi would be. Oh yeah, the Brandi in the song was also a bartender. Her name was spelled with “y,” but we like our local girl’s version better.
Brandi said she’s out in the night scene quite a bit, wearing fancy clothes, stiletto heels and “practicing drinking” as much as she can. After all, she hasn’t tied the knot yet. She doesn’t even have a boyfriend. Single!
Brandi does have a daytime/serious job. She’s a full-time insurance agent, which is a plus. Can you imagine having someone taking care of your insurance paperwork and them serve you a beer? Again, she’s single, which probably won’t last long.
Jailhouse Pub and Grill will host a grand opening June 11 with live music, drinks and pupu specials. Two, not one, huli-huli pigs will be offered. The party is going to be right on Kamehameha Day weekend, so it promises to be quite a fun day. Don’t miss it.
