LIHU‘E — A man accused of shooting his wife and then barricading himself in his Koloa home with their two children appeared in court Wednesday for his arraignment.
Dominador “Ador” Padua, 47, faces second-degree attempted murder, second-degree assault and four gun charges. Those gun charges are permit to acquire a firearm, two counts of carrying or use of a firearm in the commission of a separate felony, and storage of a firearm — responsibility with respect to minors.
Dressed in a blue tank top, gray cargos and shackles, Padua appeared with defense attorney Craig De Costa before District Court Judge Trudy Senda. She set his bail at $710,700 and set his preliminary hearing for 12:30 p.m. on Friday. The judge also assigned an interpreter for Padua, based on his attorney’s request.
First Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jake Delaplane said he would call six to 10 witnesses for that hearing.
Police arrested Padua, 47, at his home on Olona Street Sunday night, more than two hours after the shooting allegedly took place. A neighbor said Janet Padua jumped out of a window in her home, cutting her abdomen in the process, to escape.
Police say Padua barricaded himself in his home, while the couple’s two children, age 14 and 17, stayed with him. Officers eventually negotiated their release. Police then convinced Padua to surrender, a county press release said.
Police recovered a .38 caliber revolver from the residence.
County spokeswoman Sarah Blane said Janet Padua went to Wilcox Memorial Hospital following the shooting. However, the woman was no longer registered at the hospital on Tuesday. She did not know if she was treated and released or transferred to another hospital.
Padua is being held at the Kaua‘i Community Correctional Center.
