KOLOA – A nephew of Koloa resident Dominador Padua said this afternoon that police arrested his uncle last night in connection with the shooting at their home on Olona Street.
“It was my uncle, “Ador” Padua, who had the gun in his hand,” said Edwin Balmores, part owner of Mama Lucy’s Kitchen where Padua works. “I don’t know if he was trying to shoot his wife.”
Padua is the brother of Mama Lucy, and lived with his wife, Janet, in the bottom floor of Balmores’ home, he said.
According to a county press release, the 47-year-old man barricaded himself in the home when officers arrived at the residence on Olona Street at 8:23 p.m. They closed off a large perimeter around the home, evacuating nearby residences.
The couple’s two children, ages 17 and 18, voluntarily remained in the home with their father until police were able to negotiate their release at about 9:50 p.m. The children were initially taken into police custody then temporarily transferred to a family member. Neither child reported injuries.
KPD personnel convinced him to surrender by about 10:30 p.m. He did so without incident.
Janet Padua, 42, was reportedly shot in one thigh with a small-caliber handgun at approximately 8:19 p.m.
She then jumped out a window of the home, sources said, cutting herself in the process.
Medics transported the woman to Wilcox Memorial Hospital for treatment around 9 p.m. Her condition is still unknown.
Police recovered a .38 caliber revolver from the residence.
Padua remains in police cellblock in lieu of $516,000 bail. His court date is pending.
According to Padua’s Facebook account, he worked at The Garden Island newspaper along with Mama Lucy’s Kitchen.
He served as a full-time production assistant at the paper until April 18.
Balmores said he was in the home at the time of the shooting, but did not see it occur.
“All I heard was yelling,” he said.
