KOLOA — Koloa resident Dominador Padua surrendered to police Sunday evening at his home on Olona Street after a shooting that injured his wife and a brief standoff with law enforcement.
Officers arrested the 47-year-old man on second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and three gun charges, KPD Assistant Chief Roy Asher said.
“It was my uncle, ‘Ador’ Padua, who had the gun in his hand,” said Edwin Balmores, part-owner of Mama Lucy’s Kitchen where Padua works. “I don’t know if he was trying to shoot his wife.”
Padua is the brother of Mama Lucy. He lived with his wife, Janet, in the bottom floor of Balmores’ house, he said.
Balmores said he was in the home at the time of the shooting, but did not see it occur.
“All I heard was yelling,” he said.
Police responded from multiple stations to the scene of the incident.
Padua had barricaded himself in the home when officers arrived at the residence at 8:23 p.m., a county news release states. Authorities closed off a large perimeter around the home, evacuating nearby residences.
The couple’s two children, ages 14 and 17, voluntarily remained in the home with their father until police were able to negotiate their release at about 9:50 p.m., the release states. The children were initially taken into police custody, then temporarily transferred to a family member. Neither child reported injuries.
KPD personnel convinced Padua to surrender around 10:30 p.m., the release states. He did so without incident.
Janet Padua, 42, was reportedly shot in her thigh with a small-caliber handgun at approximately 8:19 p.m. She then jumped out a window of the home, sources said, cutting herself in the process.
Medics transported her to Wilcox Memorial Hospital for treatment around 9 p.m. Her condition is still unknown.
Police recovered a .38 caliber revolver from the residence. The related gun charges Padua was arrested for include: illegal place to keep a firearm, failing to get a permit to acquire a firearm and failure to transfer.
Padua remains in police cellblock in lieu of $516,000 bail. His court date is pending.
‘My husband shot me’
Outside of the home on Monday, detectives were interviewing residents there and their neighbors. Several bags of trash sat in the front yard, and the home was partially decorated with Christmas ornaments, including a snowman on the door and a snow flake hanging from the roof’s front eaves.
Next door, Karene Kunimura said Janet Padua came to her house following the shooting. Kunimura was in town from Honolulu to visit her mother.
“Sleepy town Koloa, more excitement than back home,” Kunimura said.
At about 8 p.m., Kunimura said she’d heard a lot of angry yelling and screaming next door, followed by a gun shot. Then her neighbor, whom she believes is named Janet, struggled to her door.
“She said ‘Call 911, my husband shot me,’” said Kunimura, who recalled that the woman was bleeding from one thigh and along her abdomen. “She said she jumped out of the window to escape.”
Another neighbor had already called for police assistance, and a nurse living there checked out the woman, whom Kunimura brought into a bathroom.
“She was more concerned about her daughters,” Kunimura said. “That’s all she could talk about.”
Kunimura added that the woman said her husband had threatened to kill himself.
Firefighters soon arrived and an ambulance took her to the hospital.
Kunimura and her mother were then evacuated to another neighbors house, where they remained until about midnight.
Another neighbor, who asked not to be named, said police asked if he could leave his home as they attempted to get Padua to surrender. He said he could not because his mother, who lives with him, is bedridden.
He added that he did not hear gunshots but did see about 10 police officers surrounding his next-door neighbor’s house.
“The cop said to just lock the doors,” he said.
The incident remains under investigation.
