KILAUEA — The Department of Water has issued a boil water advisory as a precautionary measure for portions of Kilauea that were notified yesterday about a cross connection in the DOW water system, according to a county press release.
Affected areas include: Kuhio Highway from Wailapa to Kapuna roads; Huli and Waiakalua roads; and portions of Ko‘olau Road.
Residents in the affected areas should bring their water to a full boil for two minutes before drinking it or cooking with it. Boiling the water will eliminate the immediate risk of microbial infection, the release stated.
The boil water advisory is effective until further notice.
Officials are expected to make a determination on Saturday morning on whether to continue the restricted use following a water sampling. An update will be issued at that time.
A preliminary sampling taken yesterday has shown that the DOW system in Kilauea was compromised due to a cross-connection with irrigation water on private property.
DOW crews flushed and sampled the water system throughout Thursday afternoon and into the night. Subsequent test results indicate the suspect water was successfully removed, and is no longer a concern.
The DOW would like to remind customers that Part 3, Section XX of DOW rules and Regulations states: no cross-connections with other water supplies, or other physical connections, shall exist, or be installed, located, maintained or operated which could permit backflow of contaminated water, except in situations where there is adequate protection against backflow.
Failure to follow DOW rules and regulations as they relate to cross-connections and backflow will result in discontinued water service for that consumer until such time that the consumer is deemed in compliance.
Water Buffalos (tankers) with clean water will continue to be located on Kuhio Highway at Wailapa Road and Kapuna Road, until the water quality is determined to be up to standard.
Customers are asked to bring their own containers.Call the DOW at 245-5455 for more information. For emergencies call Police Dispatch at 241-1711.
