WAIMEA — A waterline repair on Ola Road in Waimea is complete and water has been restored to businesses and residents in the affected area.
“The Department of Water would like to once again apologize for the inconvenience and thank all of the affected businesses and residents for their patience and understanding,” a county press release said.
The break closed Waimea High School for the day, and impacted a variety of businesses and residents. Those included the Waimea Fire Station and Big Save.
Health and safety concerns regarding bathroom usage and no water prompted the decision, Superintendent Bill Arakaki said in an email to The Garden Island.
Students riding buses to school were transported back to their community bus stops. Students and staff were released for the day.
Waimea High School will resume normal operations on Friday.
The age of the pipeline, constructed around 1924, was a factor in the break, the county press release said.
The water department has been working on upgrading aging infrastructure following Water Plan 2020, a comprehensive, long-range planning effort, to ensure that safe, affordable and sufficient drinking water is provided to Kauai residents over the next two decades, the release said.
