LIHU‘E — Hawai‘i Pacific junior Kameron Steinhoff died from brain injuries he suffered in a Monday night skateboarding accident, states a release from the HPU athletic department.
Steinhoff was a three-year member of the HPU basketball team and a 2008 graduate of Punahou High School, where he helped lead his team to the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division I state basketball championship.
Named the Hawai‘i State Player of the Year, Steinhoff averaged 15.4 points per game his senior season at Punahou, while also lettering in football.
“Kameron was an outstanding person in many ways,” said HPU basketball coach Darren Vorderbruegge. “He was a great basketball player but equally important, he was a great student at HPU. Most importantly, he was a tremendous teammate and friend to everyone who knew him.”
Steinhoff redshirted his first season at HPU in 2008-09. He then played in 51 games over the past two seasons, this year averaging 4.1 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. He played in 27 games, starting four, and averaged 17.5 minutes per contest.
Born in Ewa Beach, Steinhoff called Pearl City his hometown. According to his HPU profile, he was nicknamed “Steiny” or “Kam Kam,” and was majoring in Human Resource Management.
Kameron was the son of Shawn and Kathleen Steinhoff.
