LIHU‘E — Carrying the momentum from a tremendous second half into the state tournament proved difficult for the Waimea Menehune.
The Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation champions were topped by the No. 4 seed Kohala Cowboys, 3-0, Thursday in the first round of the New City Nissan Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division II Boys Volleyball Championships.
Playing at O‘ahu’s McKinley High School, Waimea fell by set scores of 25-22, 26-24, 25-19 on the opening day of the eight-team Div. II tournament.
The Menehune will now move into the Consolation Bracket, where they will face Kahuku at 7:30 p.m. tonight, playing at Maryknoll School.
After their 3-3 first round of the KIF season, Waimea rebounded with a 5-1 second round and forced a meeting with the Kaua‘i Red Raiders for the league title. Waimea came out with a 3-1 victory in that match, sending the school back to the state tournament.
Kevin Killerman led the Menehune (9-5) with 11 kills and four blocks against Kohala (16-0).
The Cowboys got 13 kills apiece from Donald Wong Jr. and Christopher Roburgh on their way to the victory.
No. 3 seed Seabury Hall was a 3-1 winner over Lanakila Baptist by scores of 25-18, 22-25, 25-22, 25-16.
Seabury Hall (9-1) will now face No. 2 Castle in today’s first semifinal match at 5 p.m. at McKinley High School. Castle (16-0) was a 3-1 winner over Hawai‘i Prep (25-22, 14-25, 25-22, 25-15).
That will be followed by Kohala taking on No. 1 Hawai‘i Baptist (15-3) in the second semifinal at 7:30 p.m.
Hawai‘i Baptist made it through with a 3-0 win over Kahuku (12-6), by scores of 25-9, 25-21, 25-16.
Lanakila Baptist (11-9) will face Hawai‘i Prep (10-6) in the first consolation game today, scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Maryknoll.
The Div. II tournament will conclude with a triple-header, Saturday at McKinley. First up will be the consolation final (or fifth-place match) at 1:30 p.m.
That will be followed by the third-place match at 3 p.m. Then the championship match will begin at 5 p.m.
All three Saturday matches will be broadcast on ESPN 1500 AM radio.
Division I
Top-seeded Punahou advanced to the semifinals of the Div. I bracket with a 3-0 sweep over Pearl City, Thursday at Kea‘au High School.
Punahou (20-0) moved on with a 25-16, 25-14, 25-17 victory.
It will now face Kamehameha-Big Island today, which came away with a 3-1 win over No. 4 seed Baldwin by scores of 25-15, 19-25, 25-13, 25-23.
That will be the first semifinal, beginning at 5 p.m.
The second match will feature No. 2 Moanalua, which was a 3-0 winner over King Kekaulike — 25-13, 25-18, 25-17 — at Waiakea High School.
Its opponent will be Kamehameha-Kapalama, which scored a 3-0 win over No. 3 Waiakea, 25-18, 25-15, 25-16.
The Moanalua vs. Kamehameha-Kapalama match will be at 7 p.m.
All of today’s semifinal and consolation matches, as well as Saturday’s four matches will be played at Kea‘au High School.
