A mouth guard and cleats, non-metal type, are pre-requisites for the Chad Owens and The Bess Route Foundation free football clinic for youth ages 7 through 17 on May 14 at Vidinha Stadium.
Tina Albao of the Lihu‘e Pop Warner Association said a limited number of mouth guards will be available for purchase at $1 each on the day of the clinic.
Additionally, the Pop Warner football associations from Lihu‘e, Kapa‘a and Koloa are hosting a food drive to benefit the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank and are asking people to bring a canned good, which will be turned over to the KIFB representative at the stadium.
Because the clinic coincides with the annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk, Ho‘olako Road will be closed until 8 a.m., May 14.
Check-in for the younger children is at 8 a.m. and walk-ins will be allowed based on space availability.
The older division currently has 85 spots open and registration can be done at the check-in, which will be at 10:30 a.m.
There is no charge for youth participants and lunch and dinner will be provided for participants. A food booth will be available for nonparticipating patrons.
“This is an awesome opportunity for a child to learn from professional athletes such as Chad Owens, wide receiver, Gerald Welch-Darnell Arceneaux, head coach for St. Louis, Michael Carter, quarterback, Jeremy Inferrera, offensive line, Nate Ilaoa, running back, Laa nui Correra, defensive line, Maa Tanuvasa, defensive line, Chris Brown, line backer, David Maeva, line backer and Eddie Klineski, defensive back,” Albao said.
“Last year, more than 90 children paid $100 to attend the clinic. This year, we are so appreciative to Davone Bess of The Bess Route Foundation for sponsoring the event.”
Albao said the event is also getting help from The County of Kaua‘i and volunteers from the Lihu‘e, Kapa‘a and Koloa Pop Warner football associations.
