LIHU‘E — Chas Okamoto completed his run to the state title without dropping a set, finishing things off with a 6-4, 6-2 win over No. 2 seed Kento Tanaka-Tamaki, Saturday morning.
Rolling through the Carlsmith Ball/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association State Tennis Championships, the senior from Kapa‘a High School swept his 10 sets and lost just 11 of the 71 games he played.
The No. 1 seed in the Boys Singles state tournament, Okamoto entered the event coming off his Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation Boys Singles championship.
He was also named a KIF All-Star for tennis this past week (full All-Star listings at left).
Winning his first three matches all by perfect 6-0, 6-0 scores, Okamoto topped Punahou No. 3 seed Robin Kiyabu Friday, 6-4, 6-1, to earn his spot in Saturday’s title match.
His results alone were good enough to have Kapa‘a Boys finish in a tie for third place in the tennis team standings with eight points.
Kaua‘i Boys finished with one point from a first-round win by BJ Kai and Otis Llewellyn in doubles.
Kaua‘i’s Sarah Kukino finished in fourth place in the Girls Singles bracket, after losing her third-place match Saturday by default. Details of the default were not known.
Her results, along with a first-round doubles win for Shay Orial and Jennifer Grady, gave Kaua‘i five points for a fifth-place finish in the Girls Team standings.
Island School and Waimea each finished with one point, as Island School’s Madison Duarte and Meghan Perius notched a first-round doubles win, while Waimea’s Lani Rae Green had a first-round singles win, before losing to Kukino.
