LIHU‘E — After being three outs away from a 10-run rule victory, the Waimea Lady Menehune found themselves in a dogfight Wednesday.
Having taken a commanding 12-2 lead over the St. Francis Troubadours, Waimea saw its advantage vanish in the blink of an eye as its opponent piled up 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to even things up at 12-12.
But the Lady Menehune rebounded and responded for a 20-12 win in their quarterfinal game of the 2011 Datahouse Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Softball Championship tournament.
Starting pitcher Shelly Koerte went the distance to pick up the victory for Waimea.
It will now move on to face No. 3 seed Kahuku in today’s semifinal game. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
That game will be played at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The game will be broadcast live on JAMZ 98.1 FM with “Anahola” Joel Pahukula behind the microphone.
St. Francis showed its ability to put together the big inning in last week’s victory over the Kaua‘i Red Raiders to get into the Div. II bracket. In that game, it scored eight runs in the first inning, then 14 runs in the sixth to come away with the 24-11 win. Its two games with KIF opponents have resulted in 67 runs.
Waipahu 11, Konawaena 0
Waipahu has made a statement in its first two games of the tournament, following up a 15-0 topping of Kohala with Wednesday’s 11-0 win over No. 4 seed Konawaena.
Tali Villiamu got the victory for Waipahu by tossing a five-inning no-hitter.
Tammy Villiamu went 3 for 3 with a pair of runs scored to lead the bat attack as Waipahu put up one in the first, four in the second, five in the third and one more in the fourth.
It now advances to take on top-seeded Pac-Five in today’s semifinals.
Pac-Five 10, Kalaheo 2
Alena Hookano went 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs to lead Pac-Five, while pitcher Sophia Luczak got the victory, pitching a four-hitter.
Kamalei Ah New was also 3 for 3 with three RBIs and Quirena Natividad went 3 for 4 with a pair of runs scored.
Pac-Five scored at least one run in every inning, getting one in the first and second, then three in the third, one in the fourth and two apiece in the fifth and sixth. Kalaheo didn’t get on the board until it scored a pair in the top of the sixth, trailing 8-0.
Shanez Lolo went 2 for 3 for Kalaheo.
Kahuku 5, Waialua 1
No. 3 seed Kahuku broke a scoreless game open with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on its way to the 5-1 victory.
Pitisi Tualau pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts and drove in three runs as the Red Raiders beat the Bullodgs.
The only hit Tualua allowed was an infield single in the sixth.
In Kahuku’s four-run fifth, Tualau had a two-run single and Napua-Kuuipo Aumua-Yamamoto and Kylee-Marie Dicion-Leong each contributed run-scoring singles.
