LIHU‘E — The Raiders will have first-game honors this morning on O‘ahu.
As the No. 2 seed in the Wally Yonamine Foundation Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division II Baseball Championships, the Kaua‘i Red Raiders will take to the Hans L’Orange Field at 11 a.m. for first-round action.
Their opponent will be the Kalaheo Mustangs (9-3) out of the O‘ahu Interscholastic Association. The game will be broadcast live on JAMZ 98.1 FM with “Anahola” Joel Pahukula on the call.
Having won the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation league title with a 6-2 win over the Waimea Menehune on April 23, Kaua‘i looks to duplicate what Waimea did last year, which was win the D-II state crown. The Raiders reached the championship game in the first two seasons of the D-II baseball tournament, winning it all in 2008, then finishing as runner-up in 2009.
This year’s eight-team field is led by No. 1 seed Pac-Five, which compiled a 9-5 record in the Interscholastic Leage of Honolulu. It will go up against the Hawai‘i Prep Ka Makani (8-3) of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation at 4 p.m.
The No. 3 seed Konawaena Wildcats (10-0) from the BIIF will take on the Waipahu Marauders (11-1) of the OIA at 7 p.m.
The fourth-seeded Radford Rams (10-3) of the OIA will play the Molokai Farmers (7-1) of the Maui Interscholastic League at 1:30 p.m.
Today’s winners advance to Friday’s semifinal round. Winners of the Kaua‘i/Kalaheo and Konawaena/Waipahu games will play at 4 p.m., while winners of the Pac-Five/Hawai‘i Prep and Radford/Molokai games will follow at 7 p.m.
The championship game is scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Les Murakami Stadium on the University of Hawai‘i’s Manoa campus. The third-place game will take place at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hans L’Orange Field.
In addition to the JAMZ 98.1 FM coverage for all Kaua‘i games, ESPN 1500 AM will carry all four of today’s D-II games.
ESPN 1420 AM will have Saturday’s D-II championship game live at 4 p.m.
Division I
Hilo 6, Leilehua 5
The Hilo Vikings held off a late charge to advance to the second round of the Division I tournament with a 6-5 win over the Leilehua Mules in Wednesday’s opening game.
Hilo scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-2 lead, then gave up three in the top of the seventh before finally shutting the door for the victory.
Dustin Tagawa picked up the complete-game victory, going 7.0 innings and giving up four earned runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out three. He also went 1 for 3 with two RBIs.
Kenan Sadanaga went 3 for 3 with two doubles for Leilehua.
Hilo advances to take on No. 2 seed Moanalua today at 2 p.m.
Pearl City 3, Kamehameha-Maui 1
Isaac Shim threw a four-hitter in the Chargers’ 3-1 first-round victory over the Warriors, Wednesday.
Shim gave up no earned runs, no walks and struck out four.
Pearl City scored a pair in the top of the fourth and kept Leilehua off the scoreboard after a first-inning unearned run.
Pearl City advances to take on No. 4 seed Waiakea today at 11:30 a.m.
Kailua 11, Roosevelt 1
The Kaliua Surfriders advanced via the 10-run rule with an 11-1 win over Roosevelt. Pitcher Jake Cobb-Adams threw the complete-game six-hitter for the victory.
First baseman Bryson Dymond went 3 for 4 with a double, two runs and an RBI, while designated hitter Alan Baldwin had three RBIs.
Kailua advances to take on No. 1 seed Saint Louis tonight at 7 p.m.
Mid-Pacific 7, Mililani 1
Mid-Pacific picked up the 7-1 victory over Mililani on nine hits in the ballgame.
It will now advance to take on No. 3 seeded Baldwin today at 4:30 p.m.
