Fortunato Villa Valle
Fortunato “Orto” Villa Valle of Hanama‘ulu died Friday, April 22, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at age 88. Born in Mangaterem, Pangasinan, Philippines on Sept. 3, 1922, to parents Thomas and Teresa Valle, he worked for the Lihu‘e Plantation until his retirement in 1982, holding various positions to include a supervisory position of crew chief.
Orto found joy working as a hall cane truck driver in which he told many stories driving his truck named Haiko and Piliha. Orto also delighted in playing for the band Sampaguita in which he primarily played the clarinet, trumpet, and saxophone.
He was an avid outdoor adventurer and enjoyed living off the land. Of the numerous activities Orto participated in, he found greatest pleasure when fishing, mushroom and clam picking as well as prawning. With the love of the land, and his family, Orto chose to call Kaua‘i his home. It is on Kaua‘i that he chose to live his final days surrounded by close family and friends.
He was preceded in death by daughter, Teresa Valle, and brother, Graciano Valle.
Fortunato Sr. is survived by his wife of 57 years, Narcisa J. Valle; his five children: sons, Raymond Valle (Blanche) of Wailua, Kaua‘i; Fortunato “Forto” Valle Jr. of Hanama‘ulu; daughters, Flordeliza “Lisa” Valle (Moku) of Seattle, Wash.; Florentina “Flor” Valle (Brad) of Concord, Calif. and Ludivina “Ludi” Valle of Hanama‘ulu; nephew, Arnold Valle of Hanama‘ulu; and sister-in-law, Mercedes Valle as well as numerous nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters.
The funeral service will be held at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 10, at Immaculate Conception Church. Burial services to follow at Lihu‘e Cemetery. The family request aloha attire.
Manuel Andrade Jr.
Manuel Andrade Jr. of Kalaheo died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on April 30, 2011, at age 92. Born in Kalaheo on Sept. 20, 1918, and retired as a tax collector with the State of Hawai‘i Department of Taxation, he was the proprietor and manager of OK Cattle Ranch.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae R. Andrade; parents, Manuel S. and Minnie Andrade; brothers, Joseph Andrade, Antone Andrade and Alfred Andrade; brothers-in-law, Joseph Costa and William Medeiros; and sister-in-law, Rose Andrade.
He is survived by two sons, Manuel H. (Phyllis) Andrade Sr., Michael (Sherry) Andrade; three daughters, Joyce (Anthony) Silva, Patricia (Howard) Naleimaile, Loretta (Ronald) Blackstad; sisters, Beatrice Costa, Margaret Medeiros; grandsons, Koni (Debbie) Silva, Kevin (Adrienne) Blackstad, Corey (Elise) Silva, Kris Blackstad, Manuel H. Andrade Jr., Brian (Charlene) Andrade, Kyle (Wailana) Blackstad; granddaughters, Lisa (Michael) Pai, Celeste Naleimaile, Vanessa (Edward) Punua, Sharleen (Meha) Balmores, Skye Andrade; 22 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Andrade, Susan Andrade; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, May 7, at Holy Cross Church with visitation from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the Andrade family with arrangements.
Carey Kunimoto
Carey Kunimoto of Wailua, Kaua‘i, died peacefully April 6, 2011, at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn., with his family by his side. He was 61 years old and retired as a teacher.
He is survived by his wife, Liz; daughter, Darcy (Dane) Yamamoto; son, Mark; brothers, Daniel Kunimoto and Ken Kunimoto; two granddaughters, Navaeh and Mailani Yamamoto.
Visitation starts at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, May 7, at Kapa‘a Missionary Church. Service will follow at 10:30 a.m.
Restituto Parubrub
Restituto “Resty” Parubrub of Kekaha died April 26, 2011, at Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital at age 88. Born on June 10, 1922, in Ilocos Norte, Philippines, he was a sugar processor with Olokele Sugar Company.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Rebecca Parubrub (Rudy) Dela Cruz.
He is survived by his wife, Magdalena Parubrub; sons, Henry (Ederline) Parubrub of Kaumakani, Dusty (Pamela) Parubrub of Koloa, Noel (Alicia) Layaoen of Kekaha and Wilbur (Denise) Parubrub of Kaumakani; daughter, Lily Millare of Hanapepe; 20 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel; service at 10 a.m. followed by burial at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens.
Casual attire is suggested.
Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary.
Shoichi Harada
Shoichi Harada of Honolulu died April 23, 2011, at the Aloha Nursing & Rehab Centre at age 88. Born in Mana and retired as a Castle & Cooke/Hawaiian Tuna Packers weight master, he was also a veteran of the 442nd Infantry Regimental Combat Team/100th Battalion Company B.
He is survived by his three sons, Walter S. Harada, Max W.Y. (Sharon) Shinkawa and Kirk K. Shinkawa; six daughters, Carol A. Yoshida, Ellen R. (Charles) Chong, Renae K. (Josh) Lamb, Barbara K. Pang-Chew, Alicia M. (Steve) Kawasaki, Sharlene S. Yamaguchi; sister, Doris M. Porter; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Services are being held at Hosoi Garden Mortuary on Wednesday, May 11, at 6 p.m. Visitation at 5 p.m. Inurnment on Thursday, May 12, at 10 a.m. at Hawai‘i State Veterans Cemetery.
Moani Adric
Moani Anela Kia’i Adric, infant daughter of Jaylene P. Farias and Alika L. Adric of Anahola, Kaua‘i, died on April 27, 2011, in Honolulu.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather Valentine “Babe” Adric Jr.
She is survived by her brother, Koni H. Adric; grandma Maile B. Adric; Dory Ann K. and Darrell K. Farias; great-grandparents, Patricia “Nana” Caceres and George “Tutu Man” Ai Sr.; numerous aunties, uncles and cousins.
A private service will be held.
Eric Marley
Eric “Turtle” Marley died Saturday, April 30, 2011.
He is survived by his parents and children, his art, his preservation of Native American crafts, talking story, his incredible spirit of aloha, his passion for living in harmony with nature and the random gifting of flowers.
A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, May 7, at ‘Anini Beach from noon to 2 p.m. with a potluck to follow.
