Catalina Sagucio
Catalina C. Sagucio of Kaumakani died April 18, 2011, at Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital at age 97. Born Feb. 15, 1914, in the Philippines, she retired as a laborer from the pineapple industry.
She is survived by her four sons, Inocencio (Estrella) Sagucio, Nemesio (Aurea) Sagucio, Alfonso (Leticia) Sagucio, Ernesto (Lyn) Calvan; 12 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, May 7, at St. John’s Church in ‘Ele‘ele at 8 a.m. Services will be celebrated at 10 a.m. with burial to follow at Hanapepe Public Cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary.
Shigeko Masuda
Shigeko Masuda of Kalaheo died April 27, 2011, at age 97. She was born Sept. 20, 1913.
She is survived by daughters, Judy (Roy) Koike of Los Alamitos, Calif., Carol (Ken) Hamamura of Torrance, Calif., Janice (Fred) Tanabe of Redondo Beach, Calif.; Jocelyn Masuda of Redondo Beach, Calif.; son, Clifford Masuda of Honolulu; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
A private memorial service with her immediate family will be held on Kaua‘i at a later date. Shigeko and the family request no koden, gifts and flowers.

Julia Abben
Julia “Judy” Kealohaokalani Orrick Abben died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on April 16, 2011, at age 78. Born Oct. 15, 1932, in Kahuku, O‘ahu, she was a homemaker, loved by many, and owner of Hanama‘ulu Store and very active in community and political events.
She was preceded in death by parents Joe T. Orrick and Sis Orrick.
She is survived by son Jimmy Spies of Wailua Houselots; daughter Karen (John) Whalen; brother James (Margaret); sister Elizabeth (Fred) Antone of O‘ahu; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held from 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday, May 8, at Wailua Houselots Park pavilion.
Carey Kunimoto
Carey Kunimoto of Wailua died April 6, 2011, at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn., at age 61. He retired as a teacher.
He is survived by his wife, Liz; daughter, Darcy Yamamoto (Dane); son, Mark; and two granddaughters, Navaeh and Mailani Yamamoto.
Visitation is at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, May 7, at Kapa‘a Missionary Church; service to follow at 10:30 a.m.
Fortunato Villa Valle
Fortunato “Orto” Villa Valle of Hanama‘ulu died Friday, April 22, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at age 88. Born in Mangaterem, Pangasinan, Philippines on Sept. 3, 1922, to parents Thomas and Teresa Valle, he worked for the Lihu‘e Plantation until his retirement in 1982, holding various positions to include a supervisory position of crew chief.
Orto found joy working as a hall cane truck driver in which he told many stories driving his truck named Haiko and Piliha. Orto also delighted in playing for the band Sampaguita in which he primarily played the clarinet, trumpet, and saxophone.
He was an avid outdoor adventurer and enjoyed living off the land. Of the numerous activities Orto participated in, he found greatest pleasure when fishing, mushroom and clam picking as well as prawning. With the love of the land, and his family, Orto chose to call Kaua‘i his home. It is on Kaua‘i that he chose to live his final days surrounded by close family and friends.
He was preceded in death by daughter, Teresa Valle, and brother, Graciano Valle.
Fortunato Sr. is survived by his wife of 57 years, Narcisa J. Valle; his five children: sons, Raymond Valle (Blanche) of Wailua, Kaua‘i; Fortunato “Forto” Valle Jr. of Hanama‘ulu; daughters, Flordeliza “Lisa” Valle (Moku) of Seattle, Wash.; Florentina “Flor” Valle (Brad) of Concord, Calif. and Ludivina “Ludi” Valle of Hanama‘ulu; nephew, Arnold Valle of Hanama‘ulu; and sister-in-law, Mercedes Valle as well as numerous nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters.
The funeral service will be held at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 10, at Immaculate Conception Church. Burial services to follow at Lihu‘e Cemetery. The family request aloha attire.
Jasmine Lau
Jasmine Ululani Notley Lau of Wailua Homesteads died at home on April 15, 2011, at age 85. Born in Honoka‘a, Hawai‘i, on July 11, 1925, she retired as a civil worker for the U.S. Army.
She was preceded in death by husband, Oswald J.B. Lau.
She is survived by her two daughters, Stephanie (William) Fernandes and Bobbie Wong; sister, Gwendolyn Hiapo of Hilo; brother, Llewelyn (Ronnie) Notley of New York; five grandchildren, Bree L.K. Chun, Benjamin Fernandes, W. Kihei (Jaclyn) Fernandes, Nainoa (Laurel) Fernandes, and Kepa Fernandes; seven great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Private services were held. Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the Lau family with arrangements.
Restituto Parubrub
Restituto “Resty” Parubrub of Kekaha died April 26, 2011, at Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital at age 88. Born June 10, 1922, in Ilocos Norte, Philippines, he was a sugar processor with Olokele Sugar Company.
He is survived by his wife, Magdalena Parubrub; sons, Henry (Edeline) Parubrub of Kaumakani; Dusty (Pamela) Parubrub of Koloa; Noel (Alicia) Layaoen of Kekaha and Wilbert (Denise) Parubrub of Kaumakani; daughter Lily Millare of Hanapepe; 20 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel; service at 10 a.m. followed by burial at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary.
Sheila Viela
Sheila Chitose Viela formerly of Kahului, Maui died at her home in Wailua Homesteads, Kaua‘i, on April 21, 2011, at age 81. Born in Kahului, Maui, on Aug. 23, 1929, she retired as a matron of the Juvenile Detention Center of Maui.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph Lei Viela Jr., daughters, Sharlene (Donald) Shimamoto and Ione (Kirk) Brown; grandchildren, Kristy Shimamoto, Renae (Thomas) Benjamin, Ian (Molly) Brown, and Laura Brown; great-granddaughter, Kierstyn Benjamin; brothers Charles (Reiko) Oda and Harold (Patty) Oda; sisters, Sachiko (William) Carroll and Fusako Rodrigues; numerous nieces and nephews.
Private services are pending.

William Texeira Sr.
William “Billy” Charles Texeira Sr. of Lihu‘e died April 27, 2011, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at age 80. Born in Puhi on Jan. 7, 1931, he retired as a supervisor for Lihu‘e Plantation.
He is survived by his wife, Ida Texeira; three sons, Thomas Texeira, Chucky (Yvonne) Texeira, and Robby (Leoni) Texeira; daughter; Brenda (Ernest D.) Javier; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Moura and Francis Geller.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, May 7, at Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery Pavillion from 9 a.m. Where services will be at 10 a.m., inurnment to follow.

Rose Marie Meheula aka Rose Pia died at home on April 14, 2011, at age 61. Born in Pennsylvania on July 6, 1949, she was a dedicated homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Meheula Jr.; mother, Stephania Evans; and sister, Dodi Evans.
She is survived by two sons, Jamie (Lana) Simmons and George “Brooks” (Laureen) Pia; two daughters, Keikilani (Abbie) Simmons, Pua (Clifton) Camelo and 13 grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 28, at Niumalu Beach Park at noon.

Alfreda B. Gapuz of ‘Ele‘ele died April 19, 2011, at her home at age 92. Born in the Philippines on Aug. 12, 1918, she was a homemaker.
She is survived by her son, Stalin (Minerinna) Gapuz; three daughters, Emelda (Simeon) Gapuz; Estrella (Willy) Palalay and Erlinda (Romeo) Aguinaldo; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, May 7, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel in Koloa from 9 a.m. where services will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial to follow at Lihu‘e Cemetery.

Manuel Andrade Jr.
Manuel Andrade Jr. of Kalaheo died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on April 30, 2011, at age 92. Born in Kalaheo on Sept. 20, 1918, he retired as a tax collector with the State of Hawai‘i Department of Taxation and proprietor and manager of OK Cattle Ranch.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae R. Andrade; parents, Manuel S. and Minnie Andrade; brothers, Joseph Andrade, Antone Andrade and Alfred Andrade; brothers-in-law, Joseph Costa and William Medeiros; and sister-in-law, Rose Andrade.
He is survived by two sons, Manuel H. (Phyllis) Andrade Sr., Michael (Sherry) Andrade; three daughters, Joyce (Anthony) Silva, Patricia (Howard) Naleimaile, Loretta (Ronald) Blackstad; sisters, Beatrice Costa, Margaret Medeiros; grandsons, Koni (Debbie) Silva, Kevin (Adrienne) Blackstad, Corey (Elise) Silva, Kris Blackstad, Manuel J. Andrade Jr., Brian (Charlene) Andrade, Kyle (Wailana) Blackstad; granddaughters, Lisa (Michael) Pai, Celeste Naleimaile, Vanessa (Edward) Punua, Sharleen (Meha) Balmores, Skye Andrade; 22 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Andrade, Susan Andrade; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
