HONOLULU — The Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine defeated New Mexico State in a pair of 5-4, late-inning wins Saturday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Jenna Rodriguez earned both wins in a pair of relief appearances to bring her record to 3-0 on the season.
In Game 1, Alex Aguirre launched a two-run home run in the bottom of the 6th to lift UH to a 5-4 lead and the eventual win by the same score.
In Game 2, Jessica Iwata drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning with an RBI single to score pinch-runner Jazmine Zamora, giving UH the 5-4 win.
Iwata led all hitters on the day, going 4 for 6 with two runs and five RBIs.
It was the first time NMSU has lost a series in the WAC this year and just the second time this season that it has lost three games to one opponent. The other was No. 14 Nebraska. The three losses dropped NMSU into second place, one game behind Boise State.
It was senior night for three Rainbow Wahine: Jasey Jensen, Jenna Rodriguez and Melissa Gonzalez.
Hawai‘i concludes its regular season next week at San Jose State in a three-game conference season.
‘Bows pick up 2nd straight at Fresno
FRESNO, Calif. — The University of Hawai‘i baseball team defeated No. 13 Fresno State on Saturday, 6-2. The win was the second straight over the Bulldogs, as the Rainbows improve to 9-1 in the WAC and 24-17 overall. Fresno State drops to 8-5 in conference and 28-9 overall.
Hawai‘i broke a 2-2 tie with four runs in the ninth inning to pace to the win. Zach Swasey (1 for 5, 2 RBIs) capped the big inning with an RBI-single, scoring Breland Almadova (0 for 3, R) and Jesse Moore (0-3, R, RBI).
Six different Rainbows hit safely in the game, headlined by Kolten Wong’s home run in the sixth inning. He was 1 for 3 with the solo shot and two walks.
Dusty Robinson led the Bulldogs batting 3 for 4 with one run and one RBI on a solo home run in the sixth inning.
Rainbow starter Jarrett Arakawa pitched 6.2 innings before leaving the game with the scored tied 2-2. He allowed two earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Brent Harrison (1-1) earned the win with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Charlie Robertson (0-5) was tagged with the loss for FSU in relief of starter Josh Poytress. Poytress tossed 7.1 innings allowing two runs on three hits.
Sean Montplaisir recorded one hit and one RBI, and Garrett Champion added one hit and one run.
