PUHI — Chas Okamoto has applied and been accepted at many universities and will have his choice of the institution he wishes to attend, states a release from the United States Navy League of Kaua‘i.
Okamoto, graduating from Kapa‘a High School May 20, is one of three scholarship recipients, who along with their parents, were honored by the Navy League during its meeting Friday at the Regency at Puakea.
Joining Okamoto are Kaua‘i High School senior Adriana Medeiros and Kyle McDonald of Island School.
Okamoto, the son of Charles and Nellie Okamoto of Princeville, plans on pursuing a course of study in Civil Engineering and has excelled in academics, ranking No. 1 in his class at Kapa‘a High School.
His No. 1 status is not limited to academics as his dad Charles said Chas received the top seed for boys tennis in the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Carlsmith Ball Hawai‘i Tennis 2011 State Championship coming up May 5 through 7 at the Royal Lahaina and Lahaina Civic Center on Maui.
Chas has participated in many other extracurricular activities and held positions of leadership during middle and high school.
Medeiros, the daughter of Peter and Laura Medeiros of Lawa‘i, will be looking at pursuing a career in nursing after being accepted at the University of Wyoming with the possibility of participating in the Reserve Officer Training Corps there.
The senior at Kaua‘i High School has excelled in academics while participating in varsity softball, where she anchored right field during the exciting Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation championship game, Wednesday night.
Her softball career spanned the four years in high school, and will be on the field, Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Red Raiders take on Sacred Hearts for a spot in the HHSAA Datahouse Division I and II State Softball Championships.
Medeiros has also served with Leadership Kaua‘i and volunteered at the Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital and with the American Cancer Society.
McDonald, the son of Mark and Fran McDonald of Kalaheo, plans to pursue a degree in Biochemistry or Aerospace Engineering at the University of Florida, one of four universities he applied for and was accepted.
Following acquiring his degree, McDonald plans on attending medical school and/or enter the military service as a pilot.
During his tenure at Island School, McDonald has demonstrated excellence in academics, including Spanish and math, while participating in student government, drama, sports, and other volunteer activities.
He has helped tutor younger children and performed service in the Hawai‘i Youth Conservation Corps, a Medical Mission to Uganda, Africa, and the Hawai‘i Monk Seal Program.
