LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. made time this week to acknowledge the service of volunteers who serve on the various county boards and commissions.
John Isobe, head of the county Office of Boards and Commissions, hosted the event which coincided with National Volunteer Day as the office presented tokens of appreciation for the work done by the volunteers and offered a spread of light refreshments following the close of the work day.
“These highly qualified community leaders represent the best in their fields and their knowledge, guidance and input is important to the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the county’s operations,” said Carvalho in a proclamation announcing Wednesday as Boards and Commissions Volunteer Day, coinciding the Kaua‘i event with National Volunteer Day.
The Office of Boards and Commissions was established in 2006 and provides oversight and support to 14 boards and commissions and two advisory committees in the County of Kaua‘i.
The County of Kaua‘i would like to recognize the Office of Boards and Commissions and the 113 members of the various boards, commissions and advisory committees during National Volunteer Week, the proclamation states.
The county recognizes and celebrates the tremendous efforts of these outstanding volunteers who make both personal and professional sacrifices and freely give extraordinary amounts of time in service of the county.
Since 1974, every president and elected official throughout the nation has promoted National Volunteer Week and designated a time to recognize and celebrate the tremendous effort of volunteers who serve at the local, state and national levels.
Volunteering one’s talents and resources to improve our quality of life has been a part of our American heritage and tradition, the proclamation states.
“We are inspired and honored by the diverse group of outstanding volunteers who serve the County of Kaua‘i as members of boards, commissions and committees who give freely of their time and expertise to make significant and positive changes throughout their individual and group actions by strengthening and reinforcing the democratic process and making a difference in our community,” Carvalho said.
