HANAKAPI‘AI — Search efforts have yet to turn up a Czech Republic tourist who disappeared while swimming in waters off Hanakapi‘ai Beach Thursday afternoon.
Following hours of searching waters near Ke‘e and Hanakoa beaches Friday, the Kaua‘i Fire Department concluded its sea-based search for the 63-year-old man, a county press release stated.
KFD and the United States Coast Guard continued an aerial search until sundown. The aerial search is expected to resume tomorrow morning.
A hiker near Ke‘e Beach told lifeguards of the distressed swimmer shortly before 1 p.m. on Thursday. The swimmer was last seen off of Hanakapi‘ai Beach, according to the county.
The identity of the missing man is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, the release stated.
KFD led the air and sea search, utilizing resources from the county Ocean Safety Bureau, the Kaua‘i Police Department and the U.S. Coast Guard.
