HANAPEPE — Hanapepe Library is inviting the public to a monthly lecture and film series focusing on the Hawaiian marine environment.
“The Hanapepe Public Library is thrilled to offer this new year-long monthly lecture and film series,” Head Librarian Karen Ikemoto said in a release. “Our newly completed meeting room/auditorium is an ideal setting for these lectures.”
Ikemoto said the lecture and film series is free and will be held on the first Thursday of each month from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Sean Chun will inaugurate the series this week on Thursday. Chun is an active practitioner of ho‘oponopono, la‘au lapa‘au and lomilomi and his presentation will be on “Traditional Hawaiian Medicines of the Sea and Coastline — Na mea la‘au lapa‘au o ke kai a me ke kahakai.”
Dr. Carlos Andrade, director of the Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies, will be the presenter on June 2. His topic is “Who Owns the Ocean? Geographic, Historic and Native Hawaiian Perspectives.”
Janet Kahalekomo, a longtime cultural educator and salt maker and kupuna at ‘Ele‘ele School, will be speaking on “Pa‘akai: The Tradition of Making Salt in Hanapepe,” on July 7.
“We appreciate the speakers who have agreed to share their knowledge and experiences with us as we all continue to improve our understanding of our ocean heritage,” Ikemoto said.
Continuing with the theme of understanding the ocean and its environment, Jean Souza, the Kaua‘i Programs Coordinator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, announced a free World Oceans Day Fair which to be held June 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hanapepe Public Library.
Souza said a more detailed announcement of the event will be released soon, but there will be lots of hands-on learning and fun activities with ocean-focused exhibitors providing free activities.
The lecture and film series, as well as the World Oceans Day Fair, are sponsored by the Hanapepe Public Library and The Friends of the Hanapepe Public Library.
