HANAKAPI‘AI — Rescue specialists were actively searching throughout the day for a missing swimmer in waters off of Hanakapi‘ai Beach, but the Kaua‘i Fire Department had not found the man before it concluded its air and sea based search Thursday night, states a release from the Kaua‘i Fire Department.
The search efforts will continue this morning, though the department said the effort is now being shifted from rescue to recovery mode.
According to preliminary reports, the visitor is believed to be in his fifties and was swimming in waters off of Hanakapi‘ai Beach when he began having difficulties.
A hiker in the area notified Ke‘e Beach lifeguards of the distressed swimmer at about 12:52 p.m. Thursday.
Engine 1 onboard Zodiac 1 and Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 were assisting in the search effort, but were unable to locate the man.
