LIHU‘E — The State Parks Division has released peak summer season (May 15 to Sept. 7) camping permits for Na Pali Coast State Park that were traditionally held in reserve for walk-in resident and visitor customers on island, a news release states.
The camping areas are Hanakoa, Kalalau and Miloli‘i.
Since an online camping permit reservations system went into effect in March 2010, State Parks officials have ascertained that nearly all permits are now obtained online and rarely sell out more than a month in advance, so it is no longer necessary to hold back permits for in-office purchase.
To simplify permit procedures and reduce the burden on limited permit office staff, all Kalalau permits from now on will be available to the general public online on a 24-hour daily basis — up to one year in advance, the release states.
A total of 60 slots per night are available for the peak demand summer months, and a total of 40 per night are available for the remainder of the year. The effect of this new policy will be evaluated through the upcoming summer season.
Kaua‘i residents who took advantage of the walk-in provision in past years are encouraged to make their Na Pali reservations for the summer peak season as soon as possible, the release states.
