LIHU‘E — The Nutrition and Physical Activity Coalition of Kaua‘i County, better known as Get Fit Kaua‘i — along with Communities Putting Prevention to Work and the National Complete Streets Coalition — are sponsoring a Complete Streets Public Workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the War Memorial Convention Hall.
Sustainable transportation systems for the 21st Century require focus on moving people instead of moving cars, a news release states. Planning and designing for “out-of-automobile” trips creates opportunities to reduce cost, congestion and pollution while increasing health, safety and livability. Complete Streets is a method of building roads to accommodate all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and bus riders.
Among other topics the presentation will include:
—What complete streets are, what they are not
— How complete streets can help Kaua‘i achieve multiple community benefits
— Consider examples of types of complete streets to fit in with rural living
— Review Kaua‘i complete streets progress to date
Everyone who attends this workshop and completes a short questionnaire will have a chance to win either a $400 mountain or road bike and helmet. The winner will be drawn at the end of the presentation and must be present to win. Refreshments will also be served.
There is no fee for the workshop.
