PO‘IPU — Artist Matt Gordon of Detroit demonstrated his flair for photorealism on one of the walls of the dressing room at Po‘ipu Surf shop in Kukui‘ula Shopping Village on Wednesday.
“You don’t want to be in Detroit right now,” said Gordon, an artist in residence for RVCA Clothing, while thumbing through his sketch book.
“I’m spending a couple of weeks in Honolulu, and they sent me here for a day to do a painting for Po‘ipu Surf.”
Word of Gordon’s arrival for the commission piece spread among the retailers of surf wear and the lunch crowd at Bubba’s paused to watch the developing logo drop for RVCA before entering the restaurant located across the walkway from Po‘ipu Surf.
“We have a lot of art by local people like Scott Mijares who has a laser which he used to burn an old public domain image onto the doors of the dressing room,” said Karlos Detreaux, who along with his wife Kathy, own Po‘ipu Surf. “We want to feature local. We have a catwalk in the store and we have plans to feature local designers in fashion shows.”
Gordon’s primary medium is acrylic paint and his brush produces realistic renderings of people, accompanied by an imp or two.

“We’re lucky to have companies that have the ‘Artists in Residence’ program,’” Detreaux said.
“Matt is one of the first artists RVCA picked up when it started its program.”
