WAILUA — Fans of Lydgate Beach Park’s two swimming ponds can rejoice … well, in May, anyway.
The ponds are on the verge of being restored to their original condition, but the county will have to close them for about a month to do so.
The project, according to a county press release, is a response to public requests to fix up the large pond at Lydgate Beach Park.
The county hired local contractor Goodfellow Brothers Inc., to do the work for $274,450.
The ponds are expected to be closed from April 4 through May 13.
The Lydgate ponds were built in 1964 to provide residents and visitors with a year-round protected area for swimming, the press release states.
The scope of work includes the following:
• Dredging of the large pond to increase its depth, from about 31/2 feet to between seven to nine feet.
• The excavated sand from the pond will be spread over roughly 700 feet of the beach dunes.
• Boulders that have fallen inside the pond from their original positions along the border will be put back in place. Doing so will help reduce the amount of logs deposited into the pond following major storms.
• Naupaka will be planted along the sand dunes.
