The Garden Island Renegade Rollerz is inviting the public to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day during its official interleague bout, Saturday starting at 6 p.m. at the Kapa‘a hockey rink.
Coming off a highly-successful tour to the Big Island where the GIRR chalked up their first win with a 131-101 showing over the Hilo Paradise Rollergirls last week, the girls will be back on the concrete this weekend, broken down into either Shamrocks or Rainbows.
“It (the win) was so awesome,” said Kanoe Ahuna, in an e-mail. “We played before a sold-out crowd of 2,500 people in the Afook Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo.”
Aquarius Kalama, coach of the GIRR, said this was the first time the girls rolled before such a huge audience, and to come back with a win made the trip worthwhile.
The GIRR is dedicated to providing an opportunity for women athletes to achieve their maximum potential, athletically, intellectually, and socially through the sport of roller derby.
Admission to the Saturday bout is a $5 donation at the gate.
