Niumalu tops Open Women
Namolokama Canoe Club took top honors in two of the five divisions of the 42nd Annual Prince Kuhio Long Distance outrigger canoe race, Saturday.
Starting from Kalapaki Beach, canoes surged through rough wind-blown surf with Namolokama (1:19:44) taking the Open Men division by less than three minutes over Kukui‘ula Outrigger and Sailing Club (1:22:12).
Namolokama also topped the Men Master 50 division with a 1:29:42 paddle, almost four minutes ahead of Kaiola Canoe Club (1:33:30). Kihei Canoe Club finished third at 1:49:02.
Kukui‘ula, second in the Open Men division came back to top the Men Master 40 division on a 1:21:57 paddle, about five minutes ahead of Kaiola (1:26:23), Namolokama (1:32:49) and Hawaiian Kanaktion (1:35:53).
Kukui‘ula also placed second in the Mixed Open with a 1:24:00 run, less than a minute back of Kaiola (1:23:58), but above West Kaua‘i Canoe Club (1:32:35), and a combined team from Kaiola, Pu‘uwai, Namolokama and Kawaikini canoe clubs (1:44:25).
Niumalu Canoe Club topped the Open Women division by just about two minutes over Kukui‘ula’s team, Niumalu making the run on 1:25:30 over Kukui‘ula’s 1:27:33.
Hanalei Canoe Club filled in third place less than a minute back at 1:28:53 followed by Namolokama (1:32:29), Namolokama (1:33:57), Kawaikini (1:34:02), Niumalu (1:35:49), Kukui‘ula (1:36:40), and Hanalei (1:37:28).
Hanalei also filled in third place of the Open Men division about a minute back of Kukui‘ula with a 1:23:35 paddle. They were followed by Kukui‘ula (1:24:19), Kaiola (1:27:02), Niumalu (1:29:17), West Kaua‘i (1:35:56), Namolokama Canoe Club-Anahola (1:36:02), and Pu‘uwai (1:38:59).
The event was sponsored by the Garden Island Canoe Racing Association and is just one of a variety of activities celebrating the birth of Prince Jonah Kuhio.
Prince Kuhio activities continues through the remainder of the week, climaxing with the protocol service, Saturday at the Prince Kuhio Park starting at 10 a.m.
