LIHU‘E — It’s been a strange start for Kaua‘i High, but the Red Raiders got their first victory of the season with a 10-0 win, Wednesday afternoon at the Vidinha Stadium baseball field.
With a doubleheader already rained out and one game having ended in a tie, Kaua‘i moved to 1-1-1 on the year with a shutout win over the Kapa‘a Warriors (0-2). They ended the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, via the mercy rule.
The Raiders got a complete-game shutout performance from pitcher Shea Shimabukuro, who went 6.0 innings giving up three hits, while walking three and striking out nine Warrior hitters.
Erin Doi was the big contributor at the dish, going 4 for 4 on the day with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored.
Austin Oshiro had a triple and an RBI, while Bryton Lumabao scored a pair of runs for the Raiders.
Leading 9-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Tyler Manibog scored the clinching run after he reached on a pinch-hit single. He crossed the plate on a base hit to bring the 10-run rule into effect.
Nick Tabura took the loss on the mound for Kapa‘a, while Jordan Cummings, Bronson Aiwohi and Robert Soares each had one of the three Warrior hits.
Kaua‘i got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning, then added five more in the third to jump ahead 7-0. It added two in the fifth, then the game-winner with one out in the sixth.
The Raiders have the weekend off as the Warriors will host the Waimea Menehune (2-0-1) in a doubleheader at Ron Martin Field, Saturday at 10 a.m. The second game will begin after a 30-minute break between games.
