PO‘IPU — Practice paid off for Reyn Morioka, Saturday at the Kiahuna Golf Course.
Morioka finished with a four-over par 76 to lead the Kaua‘i High School boys to a 326-team stroke win at the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation’s third round of golf.
Taking advantage of a school furlough day, Morioka played Kiahuna on Friday prior to the Saturday match.
“He had a long putt, Friday, and finished pretty good,” Morioka’s dad Mark said while the Kaua‘i golfer’s second shot to the No. 1 died in the gully about 25 feet from the flag sitting atop the fast greens in inconsistently brisk winds.
Morioka two-putted to save par on the hole.
Following Morioka, Braeden Robley (80), Justin “Pono” Tokioka (81), and Vance Tokita (100) contributed to the team scoring, Tokita making the contributor status for the first time in three weeks.
Other Raider golfers included Kai Adachi (89) and Logan Keeler (109).
Kapa‘a’s Justin Uegawa shot his best score in three weeks, finishing with an 80 to lead the Warriors to its 345-team stroke second place.
Weston Moniz also posted his best score of the season with an 81 followed by Kenji Miyata (84) who tumbled from the No. 1 scorer last week to No. 3. Jordan Guerrero (109) rounded out the team scoring.
Other Warriors on the course included Anthony Aiwohi (109), Mitchell Alves (116), Sage Lane (100), Daniel Sanchez (111), and Kawika Wellington (98).
Ka‘imi Miyashiro also posted his season’s best score, an 85 to lead Waimea to its 385-team stroke finish. He was followed by Clifton Callejo (98), with Camden and Tresten Nakashima each carding 101.
Other Menehune on the course included Derek Callejo (105), Vinda Carrineo (104), Kaiea Daligdig (117), Nahe Manoi-Resinto (114) and Ken Morikawa getting his season’s best score 96 after his parents arrived from mom’s return from Honolulu to watch.
Kaua‘i’s Taylor Viquelia also posted her season’s best score, a five-over par 77 to lead the wahine golfers.
Waimea’s Mariah Paiste also posted her season’s best score, an 87 to finish a stroke ahead of Kaua‘i’s Daezsa Tomas. Kawena Warren ended with 113.
The KIF golfers next take to the Puakea Golf Course on March 26 starting at noon.
