Six seconds separated the first and second places in the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Shakedown Series, Race No. 4, Thursday.
Racing in 10-15 knot winds out of the northeast, OZone held the lead by a large margin as Fast Company, the winner of last week’s race, contended with spinnaker problems.
But heading in the final downwind leg of the race, OZone’s spinnaker was struck and Fast Company was able to catch up and cross the line — just six seconds ahead of OZone.
Fast Company slipped across the line on a 56:07 elapsed sail and corrected to 56:12 PHRF while OZone crossed at 56:13 elapsed and corrected to 56:18 PHRF, still six seconds back.
Malihini, a 35-foot cat, crossed at 57:27 and corrected to 58:55 PHRF for third place.
Papa‘au filled in fourth place on a 1:01:33 elapsed sail and corrected to 58:55 PHRF, just a second back of Malihini. But she corrected to 54:26 Club to take top honors in that class.
Bonjolea (1:06:02 elapsed, 1:03:30 PHRF) and Windspan (1:12:30 elapsed, 1:10:39 PHRF) rounded out the field.
Crews took an unexpected return to the water following the post-race party when a tsunami warning sent the boats out to open ocean to ride out the threat.
As a pair of United States Coast Guard Motor Life Boats maintained vigil at the entrance to Nawiliwili Harbor, Friday morning, Malihini and Fast Company were seen navigating about the flotilla which included a Young Brothers barge and the Norwegian Cruise Lines “Pride of America.”
The public is invited to view the competition, Thursday when the NYC Shakedown Series continues with Race No. 5 of 6.
